Video Installations

The video monitor and the computer screen have become popular apparatus’ in the creation of Installations.  The video installation brings together a separate body of materials and integrates them into a cohesive statement. The screen replacing the historical role of the frame in painting has given the viewer a window into the creators artistic expressions and commercial product presentations.  At Foreground Image we design installations that can be used either the main attraction or an element compliment to an existing presentation.

Synopses

Fluidliving is a high-end furniture design shop, carrying pieces that cater to a clientele that appreciates a minimal approach to living. We were commissioned to create a video installation that would be continually present within the stores. It was immediately evident that this project would require a simple but elegance approach.

After discussions with the client, we established that goal of this installation would be to maintain a harmonious flow with the room and complimenting the minimalist environment while still allowing the client to view the vast catalog of pieces by the many designers that the store represented. Presenting the full catalog in this way was extremely effective and because the store did not have to provide the floor space for all the pieces it proved to be extremely cost efficient.

Treatment study

Generally a video installation can be comprised of everything from home movies to video sequences but in this case I refer to a "video Installation" as not only about the images but also the environment that they are presented in. For this particular piece the subject matter and the room was its own solution and was a natural for simple moves and gliding transitions.

When first putting together the elements the scope of this project was huge in the sequences and sheer number of items that had to be shown. Many technical issues had to be considered due to the volume of data that a project of this size generates.  Approximately 25 minutes long, a final rendered file before encoding at forty-five gigabytes, the sizable network transfers and file backups, this project could easily be considered a massive undertaking in motion graphic construction.

So I approached it with a modular concept with each section having its own intro and body, treating each section as self-contained piece and giving each title sequences subtle but unique elements. All the while still being sensitive to preserving the continuity, creating seamless transitions and most importantly re-enforcing the Fluidliving brand.

Once the piece was presented in the intended surroundings and we saw how well it complimented the high caliber of furniture design, we were happy and needless to say so was the client.

All in all though the time and efforts spent in planning out a 3d animation project are extremely rewarding and visually striking, not to mention the pleasing effect it has on the client. ;)
